It is human to crave relationship of any form. Living alone is extremely difficult, if not impossible: you do not need to be trapped in this city to witness and realize this. Humans - sentient creatures, I dare rectify, have been like this for as long as we have existed, though I suppose that it is wholly possible that such a concept may elude you still, even after three thousand years. It would certainly explain why you Dead Apostles are always bored.
